EXT. forested area - night

The FULL MOON shines in a starless sky. A forest of MOSSY TREES with SCARY FACES surrounds

VIVIAN BERGERON. She’s 17 with FAIR SKIN and long MESSY brown hair tucked behind her sharply angled EARS. A look of fierce DETERMINATION masks her fear.

As she takes careful steps forward, the moon FLASHES a spotlight on her path as she discovers a

ROYAL THRONE wrapped in CHAINS and BLACK ROSES. Chains slither off the throne, inviting her to sit.

Vivian GASPS as the harsh spotlight swings to her.

Floating FLAT STONES form a path, then GIANT VINES erupt through the earth, shattering them.

Vivian stumbles back, wide-eyed.

A GUST of WIND and AUTUMN LEAVES lift Vivian into the sky. The vines shoot up after her, but fall short.

EXT. CLOUDSCAPE - night

Vivian lands on the soft white cloud with a stumble. Autumn leaves catch her just before she falls - the wind hums, a melody begins.

Vivian straightens, then steadies herself. She glides forward, arms open, as the cloud beneath her ripples like fresh ice. The leaves support her like a dance partner. She twirls once, then leans into a graceful arabesque.

She strikes a final pose. Lightning FLASHES overhead. A crash of THUNDER becomes...

INT. vivian’s room - moRNING

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Vivian jumps awake on her ENORMOUS BED in a nest of STUFFED ANIMALS. Her movement kicks a novel, *Sasha Sidewinder and the Haunted Castle,* to the floor*.*

A STERN female voice calls out to her.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

(urgently)

Your Highness, it’s time to get up.

Vivian’s room reflects the grandeur of a ROYAL CASTLE. A silver VANITY MIRROR gleams in one corner. A dust-covered tea table and dollhouse sit in another.

Vivian slides out of bed to retrieve her book.

She flips to the marked page, where a red leaf is pressed like a bookmark. She admires an illustration of a YOUNG ELF WOMAN (early 20s) standing by MOSSY, OVERGROWN CASTLE RUINS.

A SNOW GLOBE with a GIFT BOW wrapped around it distracts Vivian as it rests on her BEDSIDE TABLE. “BERGERON CASTLE” is engraved on the METAL FRAME.

Vivian shakes the snow globe and sets it down. Inside, TINY ROSE PETALS flitter around the CASTLE.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

We are behind schedule, Your Highness.

Vivian frowns at the swirling petals.

Next to the snow globe rests an ENVELOPE addressed to the Birthday Girl. It has a red wax SEAL of the BERGERON FAMILY CREST - a TWISTED TREE wrapped in VINES. Something circular slides around inside.

Breaking the seal, a sudden, SHARP pain shoots between her ears. Her eyes snap shut, yet a faint WHITE LIGHT leaks beneath her lashes.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Shaking off the pain, she turns to glare at the door.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

Miss Vivian, we need to get ready for the gala!

VIVIAN

I’m coming! Jeeze!

She puts the envelope down, half-opened, and walks away.

Act one

Int. Vivian’s room - mORNING

The vanity mirror displays Vivian’s image in triplicate as she walks past it.

She pulls the HEAVY DOOR open.

SOLARIS (40), a gold-scaled HUMANOID DRAGON in a tunic and boots, enters with a swish of her strong tail. Black glasses perch beneath her stern brow and antler-like horns - Vivian’s no-nonsense governess.

VIVIAN

Can’t I have a day off?

SOLARIS

Sure. How does tomorrow sound?

Vivian scowls.

SOLARIS

Today, we have the Bergeron Gala.

VIVIAN

You mean my birthday party?

Solaris whips open the curtains. Behind them is a WIDE WINDOW and GLASS DOOR to Vivian’s balcony.

SOLARIS

A gala is much more than a birthday party. You’ll-

Vivian runs past Solaris to go outside.

EXT. Vivian’s Balcony - CONTINUOUS

Vivian leans over the side of the barrier and scans the area.

A running track outlines the TRAINING FIELD. Stations of fighting dummies, archery targets, and barrels of practice weapons divide the land into different sections.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

Miss Vivian, come inside at once!

VIVIAN

But the knights should be back by now!

Solaris steps outside as well.

SOLARIS

And they also keep their promises. Now, put some proper clothes on!

Vivian huffs but calms down.

INT. vivian’s room - CONTINUOUS

Vivian follows Solaris inside.

SOLARIS

His Majesty is expecting a princess, not a barefoot whirlwind.

There’s a CRASH outside the room.

Int. Castle hallway - CONTINUOUS

Vivian’s little sisters, twins VICTORIA (3) and VALERIE (3), race down the hallway. They push through a crowd of HUMAN SERVANTS holding trays of FRAGILE OBJECTS.

INT. vivian’s room - CONTINUOUS

Victoria and Valerie burst into Vivian’s room and climb onto her bed to jump around.

Vivian runs over to her sisters with a mischievous grin.

VIVIAN

Uh oh, guess what?

The girls wait for her with eager giggles. She wiggles her fingers as if to grab them.

VIVIAN

The tickle monster is here!

They shriek and run away. A harried HUMAN WOMAN in a servant’s uniform, NANNY (40), hurries into the room and blocks their path.

NANNY

Thank you, Your Highness. They split up and I-

She stops to catch her breath. The girls giggle at Nanny.

VIVIAN

Girls, no bullying Nanny.

SOLARIS

Now, time for your dress fitting.

Solaris SNAPS her fingers. A SPECTRAL HAND sheds from her own and FLOATS away to PULL a rope on the wall - a JINGLE ECHOES in the distance.

MONTAGE:

— Vivian stands barefoot on a cushioned stool, arms crossed. MILA (18) spins fabric around her like a maypole dancer. The swirls are elegant. Vivian looks bored.

— GRETA (16) clutches a pin cushion in her teeth as she darts around with a measuring tape. She yanks it tight across Vivian’s ribs. Vivian wheezes.

— Mila shoves heels onto Vivian’s feet. She wobbles, towering.

— Vivian flops into a chair. Greta attacks her hair with a comb and curling rollers; Mila seals them with a cloud of hairspray.

End montage:

Vivian glares at her reflection: an elegant dress, a tight bodice, and an army of pins in her hair.

VIVIAN

(muttering)

Now presenting... the royal pincushion.

SOLARIS

Want some cheese with that whine?

Vivian sighs as Solaris chuckles at her own terrible joke.

A spectral hand flies to her side, tapping Solaris on the shoulder with an ENVELOPE.

SOLARIS

Oh? Yes, thank you.

Solaris takes the envelope and slices it open with a talon. She reads the note inside.

VIVIAN

What’s it say?

Solaris hesitates before speaking.

SOLARIS

King Harvey Denbel of the Denbel Kingdom and his son, Harold, have accepted their invitation.

VIVIAN

What?! Who invited Scary Harry? He’s the worst!

SOLARIS

His Majesty invited them. Harold isn’t their direct heir, but...

She adjusts her glasses and scans the rest of the letter.

SOLARIS

A bit last minute, I’ll admit.

Int. Music room - day

A DUSTY PIPE ORGAN towers over Vivian and Solaris.

Vivian wears a less formal dress, but her hair is a pinned-up pile of BRAIDS and CURLING ROLLERS. She sits with her harp.

Solaris sorts through several different sheet music folders.

SOLARIS

Aha, here it is.

Solaris selects a WORN page of sheet music titled *Ever Yours.*

SOLARIS

His Majesty specially requested this one. I’m sure it will liven the mood.

VIVIAN

Not if everyone’s passed out from boredom.

Solaris sighs, rolls her eyes.

SOLARIS

Then it’s your job tonight to keep them awake.

Her spectral hands place the wrinkled paper on the stand.

SOLARIS

Here, look this over while I organize these papers. What a mess!

She SNAPS her fingers, and more spectral hands appear. Solaris hands them papers to hold as she sorts through the old sheet music.

Vivian leans in to focus on the sheet music. She plucks out the first notes of the song.

VIVIAN

This sounds kinda familiar...

SOLARIS

(distracted)

You’re doing fine.

One of the notes sounds FLAT. Vivian plucks it again and scowls. She wrenches a tuning peg to tighten the string.

It snaps. TWANG! Vivian SCREAMS. Solaris jumps in surprise.

SOLARIS

Miss Vivian!

Solaris’s spectral hands blink out of existence and drop their pages. Sheet music falls around them. The door swings open with a BANG.

DRAKE (19, HUMAN), tall and broad-shouldered in a crisp captain’s uniform, bursts in, sword drawn - all urgency until his eyes find Vivian.

DRAKE

What’s going on?

VIVIAN

Drake, you’re here!

A brief smile flickers across Drake’s face, but his eyes scan the room again before meeting hers.

SIR LEON, a BARREL-CHESTED HALF-ELF man in intimidating BLACK ARMOR, follows. He ducks to enter the room. Only YELLOWED EYES peek out from behind his heavy helmet.

SOLARIS

Prompt as always, but it was a false alarm.

Drake sees the broken string and sheathes his sword with a laugh.

SOLARIS

Congratulations on your new title, Captain Drake. You remind me of your father at your age.

DRAKE

Thank you, ma’am.

VIVIAN

When did you get back?

DRAKE

We did this morning, but I was with His Majesty finalizing the new transfer until now.

He indicates to the HULKING FIGURE beside him.

SOLARIS

Denbel’s sending soldiers now? That’s... unexpected.

DRAKE

I was ordered not to mention it until it was official. Sir Leon’s a half-elf from Denbel and well-known for his work there.

Sir Leon bows in silence. His yellowed eyes linger - too long - on Solaris and Vivian.

DRAKE

We were already on our way when I heard screaming.

Vivian marvels at Sir Leon as if he were a zoo animal.

VIVIAN

(whispers)

He’s so big. What kind of armor is he wearing?

DRAKE

Obsidian.

SOLARIS

A bit much for a basic patrol, isn’t it?

Vivian’s gaze locks with Sir Leon’s. His yellowed eyes SWIRL with a dark smoke.

A dull pressure builds behind Vivian’s eyes. A high-pitched static invades her hearing. The room lurches.

DRAKE

I’ve told him he doesn’t...

Drake’s voice fades away. Vivian feels a SHARP headache as her eyes flash WHITE. The world spins around her.

Begin vision:

EXT. Cloudy sky - night

The melody returns, twisted and wrong. Vivian’s dream continues - same wind, same swirling leaves - until they burst into FLAMES.

She FALLS through the clouds. Vivian FLIPS out of control in her free fall. The ground approaches FAST.

Below her, a TWISTED TREE withers, choked by the THORNS and VINES around it. GLOWING BLACK APPLES grow on its branches, then flash out a bright WHITE light.

Vivian shields her face as Drake’s voice ECHOES in her head.

DRAKE (V.O.)

Vivian? Vivian!

The vines SEIZE her.

End Vision:

Back to scene

Vivian gasps, clutching her chest. The last embers of the vision fade.

DRAKE

Vivian, what’s wrong?

SOLARIS

Check her eyes!

She blinks, flat on the floor, face-to-face with Drake. A look of concern sparks within his HAZEL EYES.

DRAKE

Brown, as always.

Vivian’s cheeks flush. His eyes meet hers - too close, too kind. For a moment, she stares past him, her breath caught. The heat of the embers still clings to her skin.

SOLARIS

I must be seeing things...

Drake’s calloused fingers brush her forehead with surprising gentleness.

DRAKE

(softly)

I think she has a fever.

SOLARIS

Let me take a closer look.

Solaris approaches with ORANGE SPARKS of magic in her palm. Vivian sits up and scoots away quickly.

VIVIAN

Ah no, no! I don’t need any healing magic. I just... didn’t sleep very well last night.

Solaris dispels her healing magic.

SOLARIS

Up too late reading that silly book, no doubt.

Drake chuckles.

DRAKE

I’m glad you like your present.

Vivian jumps to her feet, back to normal already.

VIVIAN

It’s amazing! I couldn’t put it down.

SOLARIS

If only you were this avid with your studies.

Vivian scowls. Solaris rolls up her sleeves. Drake joins silently to help. He and Vivian whisper as they chat.

VIVIAN

How’s your morning been?

DRAKE

The transfer took up most of it. All that paperwork...

VIVIAN

Glad I can add some excitement to your first day as captain.

DRAKE

The day’s not over yet. The recruits have their first training session soon.

Drake gives a secret THUMBS UP.

DRAKE

They could use a morale boost.

Vivian’s eyes light up. Solaris interrupts with the harp, passing it to Drake.

SOLARIS

Take this over to Greta for repairs, if you please, Captain. We’re quite busy today.

DRAKE

Yes ma’am, right away.

SOLARIS

And I hope to hear more from you in the future, Sir Leon.

Her tone is warm, but her eyes flicker with unease.

Drake bows his head before leaving. Sir Leon follows.

Solaris SNAPS her fingers. Her spectral hands organize the rest of the mess.

SOLARIS

Now where did I leave that spare?

VIVIAN

Can’t I have some free time today? I can play all of these with my eyes closed.

Solaris gives her a side-eyed look.

SOLARIS

Even the one requested by His Majesty? I’ve only just handed it to you.

VIVIAN

(pointing to her temples)

Totally. In my mind, right now.

Solaris contemplates the suggestion.

SOLARIS

I do need to do some research...

VIVIAN

It can be a humble gift to the fair elven princess on the afternoon of her seventeenth year.

She gives her puppy dog eyes, begging.

SOLARIS

(sighing)

Fine, but only the gardens. I don’t want to make Greta redo your hair.

Vivian pumps her fist in the air.

VIVIAN

Yes!

SOLARIS

I’ll be in the library if-

Vivian dashes out before Solaris finishes speaking.

Int. VIVIAN'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Vivian kicks off her heels, grabs her book, and throws open the balcony door.

EXT. VIVIAN’S BALCONY - CONTINUOUS

Vivian looks over the railing.

VIVIAN

Yes, it’s sword day!

The TRAINING FIELD is now filled. YOUNG GUARDS - human and half-elf - line up in light armor, passing out WOODEN SWORDS.

She rushes back inside.

Int. VIVIAN'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Vivian reaches behind her dollhouse to retrieve her own HIDDEN wooden sword.

INT. CASTLE HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

Vivian peeks through a crack in the door.

Servants spot Vivian. They turn to her with uniform smiles.

EVERYONE

Happy birthday, Princess Vivian!

Vivian gives a weak smile and quietly shuts the door.

Int. VIVIAN'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Vivian approaches a LARGE PAINTING on her wall.

VIVIAN

Shortcut it is.

Vivian pulls on the painting frame.

It swings open, revealing a HIDDEN PASSAGE. With her BOOK and WOODEN SWORD in hand, she exits her room.

End Act one

Act two

INT. HIDDEN PASSAGEWAY - DAY

Vivian walks briskly, her wooden sword slung on her back. She slows at a RED DOOR. Heated voices echo from inside.

CASTIEN (O.S.)

The Bergeron Kingdom needs unity, not hesitation!

She freezes.

ALMA (O.S.)

Unity? You mean a graveyard. You’re conscripting farm boys to fight monsters. They’re children, Castien!

Vivian tiptoes to the keyhole and peers inside.

INT. HIDDEN OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Through the keyhole

King CASTIEN BERGERON paces in front of a crackling hearth, every inch the battle-worn ruler. Vivian resembles Castien more with his long DARK BROWN hair and HEADSTRONG personality.

Queen ALMA BERGERON stands firm, arms folded. She has SHARP features and BRAIDED BLONDE hair. Her voice is GENTLE, but COMMANDING.

CASTIEN

The Variants must pull their weight. If we fall, no one will be left to protect her.

ALMA

So it *is* about Vivian. Or are you still trying to bury another mistake?

CASTIEN

(warning)

Alma-

ALMA

You let Celeste believe she could control that fruit.

Castien's jaw clenches. He turns to the fire.

CASTIEN

I burned the last of that cursed crop with my own hands!

ALMA

And all we have left... are ashes of her failed miracle.

INT. HIDDEN PASSAGEWAY – CONTINUOUS

Vivian steps back. Her foot brushes the edge of her sword.

It shifts. A soft THUD scrapes against the wooden floor.

CASTIEN (O.S.)

Did you hear that?

ALMA (O.S.)

Hear what?

Heavy footsteps approach Vivian.

INT. HIDDEN PASSAGEWAY - CONTINUOUS

Vivian runs from the red door, eyes wide, her thoughts racing.

VIVIAN (V.O.)

Celeste... The late Queen Celeste? But I thought she was ancient history. Why was Mother so upset?

She stops at a fork in the passage and turns toward a faint breeze.

EXT. SERVANT’S COURTYARD - CONTINUOUS

She slips through the hidden stone door, squinting at the sudden light.

Just as the main castle doors creak open, Vivian dives behind the hedges.

Ext. Royal Stables - CONTINUOUS

Vivian darts through the stables. CENDRILLON, a white horse, WHINNIES loudly at her.

VIVIAN

Cendrillon, shh!

Cendrillon SNORTS as Vivian ducks out of the building and dives behind a tree.

ExT. training field - sidelines - CONTINUOUS

Vivian looks on from behind the trees.

ExT. training field - The Huddle - CONTINUOUS

TRAINEE GUARDS stand in a circle with WOODEN SWORDS. Their practice swings are slow and STIFF.

Drake stands in the middle with a confident grin. He stretches his shoulders before taking a fighting stance.

DRAKE

All right, who’s first?

A HUMAN GUARD runs at Drake, readying an overhead swing.

Drake blocks the slow swing and disarms the guard. Two more charge; one trips into the other. The onlooking guards laugh.

Intercut sidelines/the huddle

Vivian GIGGLES. Drake looks over his shoulder. Vivian hides.

A YOUNG HALF-ELF GUARD charges at Drake. He focuses back on the fight.

Vivian runs to the tree behind Drake. She sets her book down nearby and readies her wooden sword.

Drake hits the half-elf guard with his swings - the half-elf guard flinches.

DRAKE

You have a weapon! Hit me back!

Vivian’s eyes light up as she notices an opening in Drake’s defenses, then rushes in.

The half-elf guard YELLS out a battle cry and charges.

Vivian DIVES in front to hit Drake. The half-elf guard, mid-swing, panics. Drake JUMPS between them.

The half-elf guard’s wooden sword FLIPS away.

VIVIAN

Gotcha!

Vivian strikes Drake’s side. The half-elf guard heaves a SIGH of relief and collapses to the ground. A few of his friends drag him away.

DRAKE

You can’t do two-on-one. That’s cheating!

VIVIAN

All’s fair in love and birthdays!

Drake cups his hands around his mouth.

DRAKE

Gather around, everyone! It’s time!

The guards form squad lines. Sir Leon stands in the back.

ALL GUARDS

Happy birthday, Princess Vivian!

DRAKE

Let’s do it how we practiced.

The guards start singing a HAPPY BIRTHDAY song as a choir. Vivian blushes and glares at Drake.

VIVIAN

Is this the morale boost?

DRAKE

Hey, it was their idea.

Drake chuckles. The birthday song ends.

DRAKE

Now find a partner and start the sword drills!

ALL GUARDS

Yes, Captain!

The guards follow orders.

Sir Leon marches up to Vivian and stares, STOMPS his right foot twice, and turns to walk away. Vivian raises her eyebrows in surprise.

DRAKE

Thank you, Sir Leon. Continue with your strength training.

Sir Leon is already walking away.

VIVIAN

The strong, silent type, huh?

Drake shrugs.

DRAKE

Maybe he doesn’t like your hair?

Frowning, Vivian unravels a few curling rollers.

DRAKE

Aww, c’mon. It’s not that bad.

VIVIAN

Sometimes I want to cut it all off.

She combs her fingers through her hair.

VIVIAN

Lend me your sword for a moment.

DRAKE

Not a chance.

Vivian leaves her hair half undone.

VIVIAN

I got a letter earlier... Scary Harry is coming to the gala.

DRAKE

Wait, seriously? He’s the worst! Who-

VIVIAN

Father did.

Drake stiffens but says nothing.

VIVIAN

He better not think he’s escorting me tonight.

DRAKE

Over my dead body.

VIVIAN

I’m worried Father may be planning something.

DRAKE

Lucky for you, I brought back someone special.

VIVIAN

What do you mean?

DRAKE

Here, follow me.

Drake leads Vivian to the sidelines.

ExT. training field - Sidelines - CONTINUOUS

Drake opens his LEATHER BAG and removes a BLANKET BUNDLE. Vivian moves it aside and GASPS.

It’s a WHITE FLYING SQUIRREL with RABBIT EARS and a FLUFFY TAIL. It has BIG BLACK EYES and BLACK SPECKLES on its spine.

DRAKE

This is Vanilla Bean, but I mostly call him Bean. He’s a Pygmy Glider. I found him almost frozen stiff up in the north.

VANILLA BEAN SQUEAKS. Vivian SQUEALS in delight.

Vivian reaches out to pet him, but Bean jumps away into Drake’s hair.

VIVIAN

Oh, sorry. Did I scare him?

DRAKE

You gotta let him smell you first.

Drake takes Vivian’s hand and holds it up to Bean. Bean peeks out to sniff her hand and gives it a lick.

VIVIAN

(giggling)

He’s so adorable!

Drake pries Bean out of his hair, now messier than Vivian’s. She barely stifles a snort of laughter at the sight.

VIVIAN

You should definitely wear your hair like that to the gala.

DRAKE

Only if you keep the style you’ve got now.

Drake and Vivian laugh.

VIVIAN

Father would be furious. Could you imagine?

She stomps her feet and waves her finger, imitating Castien.

VIVIAN

(deep voice)

Just what do you think you’re doing, young lady? You know better than to behave in this manner! Rah rah rah, no fun for you.

Drake hides a wry smile as he tucks Bean back in his bag.

A strong breeze blows. Leaves flutter away from the trees. One lands in Vivian’s hair.

Drake removes the leaf and twists it around in his fingers.

DRAKE

Hey, don’t worry so much. I’ll be by your side the whole night.

She watches the leaf in his hand. A strange sense of déjà vu washes over her.

DRAKE

Are you sure you’re feeling okay? You fell over pretty hard earlier.

VIVIAN

I... think so.

Loud SHOUTS come from the huddle.

ZAIDEN (O.S.)

Back off, you stupid half-breed!

CRAG (O.S.)

You take that back!

Drake runs to the shouts. Vivian follows.

ExT. training field - The huddle - ConTINUOUS

Two guards are FIGHTING amongst themselves.

A HUMAN GUARD, SIR GABRIEL (35), holds back CRAG (16). Crag is a HALF-ELF with TOUGH GREEN-GRAY SKIN. Small TUSKS poke out from his bottom lip.

ZAIDEN (17), a HUMAN GUARD, lies on the ground.

DRAKE

Everyone, let’s just-

Zaiden jumps to his feet.

ZAIDEN

(to Crag)

Mutts like you should be on a leash!

CRAG

Bring it, monkey man!

Crag shoves Sir Gabriel away.

Zaiden and Crag face head-to-head, ready to brawl again.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

That’s not very nice!

Vivian runs between them.

VIVIAN

You’re both soldiers on the same side. You should be working together!

CRAG

*Well, excuse me, Princess*, but when’s the last time you’ve been outside these walls?

Vivian stammers, shrinking under the weight of the truth.

VIVIAN

Uh, I-

She turns away slowly to walk back to the sidelines.

Crag pushes through the crowd to stomp away.

CRAG

(mutters as he walks off)

Stupid princess thinks she knows everything.

The other humans surround Zaiden to ask what happened.

Drake looks over his shoulder, watching Vivian trudge back to the sidelines. He clenches his fists.

DRAKE

Since Crag has extra energy today, more laps for everyone!

The guards groan.

SIR GABRIEL

You heard your captain. Move it!

EXT. TRAINING FIELD - SIDELINES - MOMENTS LATER

Drake and Vivian sit together in the shade, watching the guards jog laps.

ON THE FIELD

Zaiden leads the front.

DRAKE (O.S.)

I’m sorry about Crag. I know he didn’t mean it.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

Well, he wasn’t wrong... What were they fighting about?

DRAKE (O.S.)

The men don’t think Variants belong in the royal guard. The sudden change within the ranks has them restless.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

Father says the Bergeron Kingdom needs unity. It makes no sense not to work together.

At the back, Crag keeps pace.

A HUMAN GUARD slows to let him pass - then punches Crag in the shoulder hard before sprinting ahead.

DRAKE (O.S.)

Everyone has their own excuse.

Crag looks angry but keeps running at his regular pace.

on vivian and drake

VIVIAN

What is he?

DRAKE

Crag? He’s a half-elf.

VIVIAN

(pointing at her jaw)

He doesn’t look like one.

DRAKE

I haven’t exactly asked him to draw out his family tree, Viv. on the field

Sir Leon lags behind the group but maintains a steady pace.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

What about Sir Leon?

DRAKE (O.S.)

Nobody messes with Sir Leon. on drake and vivian

Vivian laughs. Drake doesn’t.

VIVIAN

I brought the book with me. Wait here, I’ll go get it.

She retrieves it. She also takes a BOW and a few ARROWS from the weapon supply barrels.

When Vivian returns, she hands the book to Drake. He opens it, flipping through the illustrations.

VIVIAN

I just got to the part where Sasha makes it to a castle.

She struggles to nock an arrow and draw it back.

DRAKE

The haunted castle?

Vivian’s fingers slip and the arrow flies.

VIVIAN

Hey, spoilers!

The arrow hits Sir Leon’s HELMET with a CLINK! He stops, turns around, and marches stiffly in the opposite direction.

DRAKE

Viv, it’s in the title.

Guards SHOUT at each other.

DRAKE

Sorry, I gotta go deal with this.

Drake hurries to break it up.

DRAKE

Really, guys? Cut it out!

Vivian hears CLANKS and SCRAPES approaching. She turns to see Sir Leon holding the arrow she fired.

She reaches for her arrow.

VIVIAN

Oh, thank you, Sir Leon.

Sir Leon stiffens. A low RUMBLE vibrates through the air, like a storm trapped in a bell jar.

His yellowed eyes flash BLACK.

VIVIAN

(startled whisper)

What...?

BLACK SMOKE pours from his mouth.

EXT. training field - The Huddle - MomENTS LATER

Drake scolds some of the guards. They’re beaten up and bruised from their fighting.

DRAKE

Just go to your bunk. I don’t-

At the sound of COUGHING, he turns his head.

BLACK SMOKE spews from Sir Leon’s MOUTH, weaving around Vivian like CHAINS.

Drake rushes back to her.

EXT. training field - CONTINUOUS

Vivian CHOKES on the smoke.

VIVIAN

What are you doing? Stop!

Drake jumps between Sir Leon and Vivian. Sunlight FLASHES along his steel blade.

DRAKE

Stay away from her!

Sir Leon ROARS. His body MELTS and MORPHS into a DARK PURPLE SLUDGE, pulsing with sickly veins. The armor CRASHES down.

GASPS ripple through the ranks. Someone drops their sword.

VIVIAN

W-what is he doing?

DRAKE

It’s a Shade! But how...

The foul, pulsating mass grows ten feet taller. It HISSES and SPITS as it burns away the grass.

DRAKE

Guards, to arms!

The young guards rush the supply barrels. They take their positions but only have wooden weapons.

The Shade slithers into Sir Leon’s discarded armor. A SHIELD lifts, then HURTLES like a discus.

Vivian freezes in fear.

DRAKE

Look out!

He dives to push Vivian out of the way. They hit the dirt as the shield SLAMS into a tree - splinters fly. A guard YELLS in pain offscreen.

Drake lifts Vivian to her feet.

DRAKE

Now run! Get out of here!

Drake rushes in to fight the oozing Shade as it lumbers toward him.

As Vivian runs, the Shade winds up - hurling Sir Leon’s helmet like a cannonball toward the scattering guards.

Vivian turns back to see DRAKE FIGHTING ALONE. He hits the Shade with a flurry of slashes.

DRAKE

Why. Won’t. You. Die!

The Shade’s flailing limbs writhe like eels. Drake pauses to catch his breath. The Shade REFORMS, whole again.

Vivian bolts back into the fight, braids flying. Her hands tremble as she strings a bow.

VIVIAN

Here, I can help!

The Shade slams down the remaining armor. The earth SHAKES.

Drake evades the attack. The remaining guards lose their balance and fall.

A few feet away from Drake, Vivian trips and drops her weapon.

The Shade reaches out a slimy arm to capture her.

Drake dashes in, using his body as a shield. The Shade latches onto him.

DRAKE

Vivian, don’t let it-

His words are cut off by an outcry of pain. He falls as the Shade encases him within its acidic maw.

Vivian fires an arrow at the Shade. The arrow falls in a short arc to the ground.

VIVIAN

(panic growing)

Let him go, you beast!

Vivian throws her bow. It bounces off the Shade harmlessly.

The Shade ROARS. A black hole PORTAL materializes.

DRAKE

(choking)

Viv... I’m glad it was for you.

The portal swallows him. In his place, a ROTTEN BLACK APPLE.

The Shade dissipates, leaving only dust.

She stares at the apple, barely breathing.

It HISSES in the grass, smoke rising.

VIVIAN

(hysterical)

No, no, no!

She runs desperately toward it.

SIR GABRIEL (O.S.)

Wait, Princess, don’t touch that!

Vivian stops and turns to Sir Gabriel. He has DEEP SCRATCHES on his arms and face.

VIVIAN

But- Drake! He’s-

Vivian’s legs give way, and she hides her face, wailing.

SIR GABRIEL

Your Highness, it’s not safe here.

Sir Gabriel offers his arm to help her stand. She won’t move.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

Miss Vivian, up. Now.

Vivian shakes her head no. Solaris reaches down and lifts Vivian to her feet.

She clings to Solaris’s tunic, tears streaming.

VIVIAN

Solaris, please! You have to bring him back.

SOLARIS

You must go inside at once, Miss Vivian, you’re filthy.

Solaris steps back and SNAPS her fingers. Her spectral hands PUSH Vivian to Sir Gabriel.

SOLARIS

Sir Gabriel, escort our young princess to her room.

SIR GABRIEL

Yes, ma’am.

Vivian struggles in her magical grasp.

VIVIAN

Hey, let me go!

SOLARIS

You are not a warrior or a mage. You are a princess, and your poor choices affect everyone. Go inside now.

VIVIAN

(sarcastically)

Sorry I can’t be the perfect princess everyone wants me to be!

SOLARIS

(matter-of-fact)

You lied about where you were going, played with dangerous weapons, *and* you ruined your hair. I specifically-

VIVIAN

All I wanted was one day. Now... I have nothing.

Vivian wipes her nose with her arm, blinking through tears as she glares at Solaris.

VIVIAN

I hate you!

Vivian runs back to the castle. A light rain sprinkles around them. Solaris remains frozen in place.

SIR GABRIEL

(to Solaris)

I will take my leave now, my lady. The injured must be seen to.

She avoids eye contact with Sir Gabriel.

SOLARIS

(sighing)

Yes, of course.

Sir Gabriel gives Solaris a salute before leaving.

Her eyes linger where Vivian ran. A tremble betrays her clenched jaw.

With a slow SNAP of Solaris’s fingers, a spectral hand collects the rotten fruit.

Fighting tears, Solaris inspects her own scaly hand. She fans out her RAZOR SHARP TALONS, then makes a tight fist.

Her spectral hand mimics her. The fruit ignites into a green flame. Noxious black smoke spews out.

Ext. storm clouds - CONTINUOUS

The swirling clouds are thick, blending in with the smoke. Lightning FLASHES in the sky.

A RUMBLE of thunder follows.

End act two

Act three

InT. Hidden Hallway - dAY

Vivian fights back TEARS. Her footsteps CREAK on the old wooden floors. She goes straight to the RED DOOR.

Int. Hidden office - CONTINUOUS

King Castien sits at a mahogany desk with a long parchment scroll and a pile of paperwork. He scans the contents with increasing urgency.

Vivian pushes the door open and runs in. Two HUMAN GUARDS reach for their weapons but stop when they see her.

VIVIAN

Father, I need to speak with you right now!

Castien looks up from his work and narrows his eyes.

CASTIEN

Solaris let you out looking like that?

He gestures at her now tangled hair and torn dress. Vivian’s voice wavers, panic creeping in.

VIVIAN

No! I mean, it was Sir Leon! He changed. A-and Drake was taken away...

Castien’s expression hardens.

CASTIEN

You barge in here - about *him*?

Vivian is taken aback.

Castien stands, his squared shoulders and flowing robes displaying his POWER and authority.

CASTIEN

I’m your father, and your king. I won’t be ordered around by a spoiled child!

VIVIAN

But if you’d just-

CASTIEN

I cannot afford to search for one man when the enemy has already crossed our doorstep!

VIVIAN

Then I’ll form my own search party since I’m now of age.

She and Castien lock eyes, their matching anger courses through the room like electricity.

CASTIEN

Under no circumstances will you ever leave this castle.

Castien sits once again and picks up the parchment to continue reading. A steely calmness barely hides his frustration.

Vivian visibly boils with anger.

CASTIEN

Guards, escort the princess to her room. She must be presentable before tonight.

VIVIAN

Why not just lock me up in the dungeons, while you’re at it?!

Vivian pushes past the guards and storms off.

Int. VivIAN'S ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Vivian pushes through her doors and slams them shut. She stomps over to her bed and notices the wax-sealed envelope.

Finally, she opens it. She unfolds a note in her mother’s handwriting only. “Happy Birthday, Darling” signed by Alma and Castien. She tips over the envelope.

A SIGNET RING engraved with the BERGERON FAMILY CREST falls into her palm. She checks the envelope again.

Vivian puts it on. It’s a perfect fit. She scoffs, then squints at the crest engraved on the ring.

VIVIAN

Stupid ring...

She clenches her fist. A strange tingle creeps up her arm. Her vision BLURS. She grabs the edge of the bed for support.

BeGIN vision:

EXT. NIGHT sky - Night

Vivian plummets into darkness.

Heavy vines strangle a twisted black tree. Its white apples pulse with light - then explode in a blinding FLASH.

EXT. TrAINING FIELD - dAY

A black apple pops through the portal from the other side.

It falls and MELTS. A TWISTED BLACK TREE breaks through the earth. The grass surrounding it DIES as the roots reach for the castle.

END vision:

back to scene

Vivian stumbles and knocks the snow globe off the side table.

It SHATTERS - broken glass and flecks of red scatter the floor. The liquid absorbs into the rug. The miniature castle remains unbroken.

VIVIAN

Great.

She drags over another nearby rug and drops it over the mess.

VIVIAN

Now, where did I...

A RUMBLE of thunder snaps her out of her musings. When she looks out the window, recognition flashes across her face.

VIVIAN

Oh no, Bean’s outside too!

INT. CASTLE HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

Vivian peeks through a crack. Several guards in uniform stand at her door. Servants pass through, cleaning and preparing for the gala.

INT. VIVIAN'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Vivian tries to open the door behind the painting, but it doesn’t budge. She gives it a final kick for good measure before scanning her room.

VIVIAN

What would Sasha Sidewinder do?

She glances at her bed, then at her balcony.

VIVIAN

Something cool.

She rips the bedsheets from her mattress and ties them together to make a rope.

Ext. VivIAN'S BALCONY - CONTINUOUS

Vivian ties one end of the makeshift rope to the barrier. She tosses the end over the side and leans over to look.

It’s several feet too short. Vivian groans in frustration as she pulls the rope back up.

INT. VIVIAN'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Vivian sits on the floor and hides her face in her hands.

VIVIAN

What would... Drake do?

The glass door to her balcony BURSTS open. A strong breeze blows. Vivian jumps up to her feet.

Autumn leaves fly into her room, then slide under the bed. One of them lands in her hair.

Vivian removes the leaf and twists it around in her fingers.

VIVIAN

He would never give up. And I won’t either.

She crawls underneath the bed.

Under Vivian’s bed

Vivian wedges her fingers underneath a flat, heavy stone and strains to pull it to the side. A STEEP RECLINING TUNNEL lies underneath.

She slides down feet first.

INT. Laundry room - CONTINUOUS

Vivian falls through a DROP CHUTE into a GIANT LAUNDRY BASKET of bedsheets and servant’s uniforms.

She peeks over the edge of the basket. The room is empty.

VIVIAN

Everyone must be in the kitchens by now...

ExT. Servant’s courtyard - MOMENTS LATER

LIGHT RAIN falls as Vivian runs to the field. She gasps in pain and hops on one foot, then sits to check on her injury.

A THORN pierced her foot. She winces as she pulls it out, then gets up and limps forward.

Ext. TRAINING FIELD - CONTINUOUS

Deep scars are carved in the earth from Sir Leon’s obsidian armor. The trees - splintered where the shield cut through.

On vivian

Her breath shudders, eyes scanning the destruction.

VIVIAN

No, this can’t...

She closes her eyes.

BEGIN FLASHBACK:

Ext. Training field - Sidelines - day

With Vivian’s hand outstretched to pet Bean, he SQUEAKS in fear and jumps to hide in Drake’s hair.

VIVIAN

Oh, sorry. Did I scare him?

DRAKE

You gotta let him smell you first.

Drake takes Vivian’s hand and holds it up to Bean. Bean peeks out to sniff her hand and gives it a lick. She giggles.

DRAKE’S BAG leans against one of the trees.

End Flashback:

Back to scene

VIVIAN

We were by a tree, so where...

A strong gust scatters autumn leaves past her — a flicker of movement beneath the trees. Her breath catches.

She follows them, wincing at each step.

VIVIAN

Bean, where are you?

The rain worsens. In the distance, she hears SQUEAKING. She runs as quickly as she can.

Ext. Sidelines - CONTINUOUS

Vivian spots Drake’s bag, tipped upside down during the chaos. A lump wiggles inside. She opens it.

VIVIAN

Bean! Are you hurt?

A safe, but annoyed Bean SQUEAKS.

VIVIAN

Sorry, I didn’t mean to forget you.

Bean sniffs the air and gives a confused SQUEAK.

VIVIAN

Drake... he’s gone. There’s something else I’m looking for. A book.

Vivian hoists the bag over her shoulder and limps forward. She searches around the broken trees. Bean pokes his head out of Drake’s bag and SQUEAKS.

VIVIAN

We were somewhere around here...

She strains to push aside a tree trunk, but it doesn’t budge. Bean sees her struggling, so he hops out to help.

The rain turns into a HEAVY DOWNPOUR. Thunder CRASHES and lightning strikes the field with a BOOM.

Vivian throws herself over Bean, shielding him as debris and splintered wood pelts her back.

VIVIAN

Are you ok?

Bean SQUEAKS out an affirmative.

VIVIAN

This storm is getting worse.

Vivian puts Bean back in the bag, then shouts at the sky.

VIVIAN

This isn’t over! You messed with the wrong prin—

BOOM! Lightning strikes the tallest tower of the castle. Vivian goes silent.

She stands, drenched and shaking. Then limps away, defiant.

Ext. Garden Gazebo - CONTINUOUS

Vivian hides under the shelter of a gazebo. She sets Drake’s bag on the wooden bench, then plops down next to it.

Bean pokes his head out of the bag with a curious SQUEAK.

Vivian lies on her side, too tired to cry. Bean snuggles up against her neck.

VIVIAN

This is all a bad dream.

In silence, Vivian and Bean listen to the HEAVY RAIN until they fall asleep.

EXT. GARDEN GAZEBO – DUSK

Light rain falls. Castien, robes damp at the edges, strides past the gazebo with his head on a swivel. He freezes when he catches sight of something.

He steps closer.

CASTIEN'S POV

Vivian, curled up on the wooden bench, shivering, asleep. Drake’s leather bag lies at her side. Bean peeks out from the crook of Vivian’s neck, SQUEAKS in fright, and vanishes into Drake’s bag.

He kneels beside her and hoists the bag over his shoulder, then brushes damp hair away from her face.

She murmurs in her sleep.

VIVIAN

(sleep talking)

Drake...

Castien’s jaw tightens as he looks away. He exhales... slow and controlled.

He gathers Vivian into his arms, cradling her like something fragile. Her forehead leans against his chest. Her breathing settles.

CASTIEN

(softly)

You’re so much like her...

He looks away.

Lightning CRACKS behind him.

He turns and walks back toward the castle, each step heavy.

INT. VIVIAN’S ROOM – MOMENTS LATER

The fireplace glows warm. Castien steps inside, careful not to wake her as he sets her down in a soft chair.

Bean wriggles out of the bag and explores the dollhouse.

Castien pulls the rope. The distant JINGLE signals staff.

He lingers for a moment, his hand hovering near Vivian’s cheek - but he doesn’t touch her.

Solaris enters, sees the scene. Castien straightens.

He hesitates. His voice lowers.

CASTIEN

She fell asleep in the gardens during the storm. Dry her off. See to her injuries.

Vivian stirs in her sleep.

SOLARIS

(bowing)

Yes, Your Majesty.

Castien exits. Solaris watches him go, her face unreadable.

Vivian wakes with a groan, then looks around.

VIVIAN

How did-

She gasps in pain as she stands, then sits back down.

SOLARIS

Where are you injured?

VIVIAN

I stepped on a thorn earlier. It really hurts.

SOLARIS

Maybe this will finally stop your ridiculous bad habits.

Vivian looks away somberly with no response.

Solaris studies her for a moment, then SNAPS her fingers.

ORANGE SPARKS fly from her hand. Vivian winces as the sparks land on her cut.

The light subsides and only a faint mark is left. Vivian scratches the spot.

VIVIAN

So itchy...

SOLARIS

That’s how you know it’s working.

Solaris pauses to examine Vivian closely. Bean hops over to nuzzle Vivian’s cheek.

SOLARIS

How have your eyes been feeling?

VIVIAN

My eyes? Fine, I guess.

SOLARIS

Good.

VIVIAN

Solaris?

SOLARIS

Yes, Miss Vivian?

VIVIAN

(pained)

What I said before. I was just- I mean... I’m sorry.

SOLARIS

Captain Drake was a dear friend of mine as well. His loss is a heavy blow to the kingdom.

Solaris steps away to call in the other servants.

VIVIAN

Solaris, how can you tell the difference between a dream and a vision?

Vivian shows Solaris her new signet ring.

VIVIAN

I saw a dying tree that looked like this. There was weird white fruit on it.

Solaris turns back, a surprised look creases her scaled features.

SOLARIS

(quietly, almost to herself)

That’s... not possible. It’s too soon-

Mila and Greta burst into the room. Bean SQUEAKS in surprise and hides in a pile of toys.

MILA

Our apologies for interrupting, Princess.

GRETA

We’ve drawn you a bath. We know it’s been-

Mila elbows Greta to stop her from talking.

MILA

We’re short on time, Your Highness.

Mila and Greta usher Vivian out of the room.

Int. Scary dungeon - LaTER

Drake lies unconscious in a dimly lit dungeon. His sword arm is badly burned, uniform shredded. Shackles pin him to the stone floor.

A DEVILISH BOY, DORIAN (18), paces just outside the cell. His gray-blue skin catches flickers of torchlight. Small horns curl from tangled hair. His long, spade-tipped tail coils nervously around one leg.

He peers into the cell.

DORIAN

(apprehensive)

Boss? W-We got the wrong one.

The heavy cell door creaks open.

Dorian flinches. He leans into the cell, nudging Drake with the toe of his boot.

Drake GROANS, then bolts upright, wincing. He locks eyes with the boy.

Dorian’s SHADOW ripples unnaturally, unfurling across the stone floor like spilled ink sliding against gravity.

It rises, twisting and coiling into the cloaked figure of THE CONDUCTOR - a pale man in exquisite clothing, a BLINDFOLD over his eyes. His presence warps the air.

Dorian takes a step back.

THE CONDUCTOR

(softly)

Wrong? Or... unexpected?

Dorian swallows hard. His tail uncoils.

Drake glares at the new arrival, teeth gritted.

DRAKE

(gritting teeth)

You-! You’re the one who—

THE CONDUCTOR

Shhh, I don’t waste time on blades and bravado.

He lifts a gloved hand, and Drake’s shackles tighten. The metal shrieks faintly.

DRAKE

(snarling)

If you came for the princess, you’ll leave in pieces.

THE CONDUCTOR

(chuckling)

Ah yes, Cassie’s oldest daughter. How precious. You sound just like your father did... Before he died.

He raises his baton. Drake tenses.

DRAKE

You won’t win. The whole kingdom stands ready to stop you.

THE CONDUCTOR

I know...

(leans in)

But can they stop her?

The Conductor bares SHARP FANGS in a grin.

THE CONDUCTOR

Rest now, Captain.

With a flick of his baton, Drake’s body locks in place with a shimmer of SHADOWY MAGIC, then hardens into STONE.

DORIAN

So... what now?

The Conductor chuckles.

THE CONDUCTOR

We wait... The intermission is nearly complete.

End act three

Act four

Int. Castle green room - night

MUFFLED VOICES from the CONCERT HALL leak in. A GRAND PIANO works as the centerpiece.

Vivian sits on a green couch. Her hair, makeup, and dress make her look like a living porcelain doll.

Bean rests in her lap while she pets him behind the ears.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

Vivian looks up. Bean climbs up to hide in her hairdo.

The door opens and a HALF-ELF GUARD peeks in.

HALF-ELF GUARD

Princess-

HAROLD (O.S.)

Get out of my way, mutt.

The guard is pulled back.

Harold Denbel (18), a WELL-DRESSED ELF MAN with BLACK HAIR and a SMUG GRIN struts the room.

HAROLD

Hey there, *Princess*.

Vivian stands in alarm, angry and uncomfortable.

VIVIAN

Go away, Harry.

Harold walks over to her.

HAROLD

You hiding back here?

VIVIAN

No, I was told to wait here.

HAROLD

Since when do you follow the rules?

VIVIAN

It’s not like that.

Vivian moves away to use the piano as a buffer. Harold follows, switching direction when she does, then corners her.

HAROLD

(smirking)

Where’s your friend?

VIVIAN

He’s busy with... knight school.

Harold leans on the piano and smirks.

HAROLD

Heard a Shade tore through your guards. How pathetic.

VIVIAN

Sir Leon came from *your* kingdom!

HAROLD

You say that, but the brute didn’t even get past his front door. They say the stench was unbearable.

Vivian stiffens and turns away from Harold, her arms crossed.

VIVIAN

What’s that supposed to mean?

HAROLD

It *means* your friend’s dead, so stop pretending-

He grabs Vivian’s shoulder.

Bean LEAPS from her hair and BITES Harold’s hand.

HAROLD

Ow, you little rat!

He flings Bean.

VIVIAN

Bean, no!

The small creature glides and lands safely on Vivian’s shoulder.

Bean SQUEAKS furiously.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

Mister Denbel.

Harold turns. Solaris stands in the doorway, unimpressed.

SOLARIS

Don’t you have somewhere to be?

Harold flushes, smoothing his jacket.

HAROLD

Yes, ma’am.

He turns to the doorway, then stops to glance back smugly.

HAROLD

No wonder the Shade—

Solaris slams the door in his face.

SOLARIS

(arms crossed)

I really do dislike that boy.

VIVIAN

Absolutely the worst.

Vivian sits on the couch and SIGHS. Bean climbs into her lap and nudges her hand to pet him.

Solaris sits next to her. Vivian rests her head on Solaris’s shoulder. They both sigh.

SOLARIS

Let’s get you backstage.

Int. backstage - MomENTS LATER

Solaris waits with Vivian in the wings. Bean sleeps curled up on one of Solaris’s antlers.

Vivian peeks past a corner of the curtain and watches groups of FORMALLY DRESSED guests trickling in to take their seats in the auditorium.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

I already know what they’re saying.

One group looks somber and nods at the conversation.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

That I’m useless.

Alma sits alone in the family’s booth, more interested in her glass of wine than the ongoings.

Nanny sits with the twins, only able to keep one of them seated at a time.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

Clueless.

Another group laughs with one another.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

A complete joke.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

They’d be wrong.

Vivian scoffs.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

There hasn’t been a vision in your family since the late Queen Celeste.

Vivian looks back at Solaris.

VIVIAN

Wait, seriously?

SOLARIS

The white fruit you mentioned - Bliss Fruit - belongs in fairy tales. Eat one, and you’re promised a happily ever after - but magic like that always has a heavy price...

Solaris paces the floor.

VIVIAN

Then why am I seeing it?

SOLARIS

Possibly a warning. Misery Fruit’s magic twists dreams into despair.

VIVIAN

That’s what came through the portal, right?

SOLARIS

I thought His Majesty had them all destroyed after...

Vivian hangs onto Solaris’s every word.

VIVIAN

After what?

Solaris clears her throat.

SOLARIS

After today, everything changes.

Vivian tilts her head in confusion.

SOLARIS

His Majesty’s plans for the future... He wants to ensure your safety. Castle security will be strengthened exponentially.

VIVIAN

What about search parties? Is no one going to look for Drake at all?

SOLARIS

Be serious, Miss Vivian.

VIVIAN

I am being serious! If Father wants to hide, fine, but I refuse.

She turns away with her arms crossed.

VIVIAN

I’ll go out and find Drake by myself if he’s so afraid.

SOLARIS

You are not skilled enough to travel alone, Miss Vivian. Whoever took Captain Drake will keep trying until they find you.

Vivian hesitates in thought, and her expression dims. The weight of despair falls on her shoulders.

When she turns to Solaris, she comes to a sudden realization.

VIVIAN

Come with me, then! You’re a dragon, aren’t you?

SOLARIS

I’m *Dragonian*. There’s a major difference.

VIVIAN

We could leave tonight while everyone’s busy with the gala.

SOLARIS

But His Majesty will-

VIVIAN

You can either come with me and save Drake or stay here and explain to Father why I’m gone.

Solaris sighs and shakes her head in exasperation, hiding a proud smile behind her hand.

SOLARIS

Nothing I say will change your mind, will it?

Vivian crosses her arms in mock defiance with a smile.

VIVIAN

Absolutely not.

The loud chattering of the audience stops. A HUMAN STAGEHAND enters the backstage.

STAGEHAND

Your Highness, are you ready?

Vivian looks to Solaris, then nods at the stagehand.

VIVIAN

I was born ready.

The stagehand shuffles away.

SOLARIS

Are you sure this is what you want?

VIVIAN

It’s my fault he’s gone. I need to be the one who brings him back.

Solaris returns Vivian’s determination with a cheeky grin.

SOLARIS

Then start with the song His Majesty picked. I will help with the rest.

Vivian pulls Solaris into a tight hug.

The sound of an orchestra warming up HUMS beyond the curtain.

Solaris’s face lights up before returning the hug.

The stagehand draws back the curtains.

InT. concert hall - CONTINUOUS

Vivian’s harp glistens on the center stage. She strides to her mark and curtsies. The audience APPLAUDS as she takes a seat.

She sniffles and wipes away a tear.

Her hands shake as buzzing whispers echo around the room. A SPOTLIGHT glares from above.

Vivian’s eyes dart to Solaris offstage.

Intercut backstage/concert hall

Solaris motions for Vivian to breathe. Together, they inhale deeply, then slowly exhale.

Vivian begins to play a familiar melody (EVER YOURS). She recognizes it as the song the wind whistled for her in her dream.

Backstage, Solaris moves her fingers like a conductor - ICY BLUE LIGHTS trail from her claws.

She waves her hands, and a GLITTERING SNOW cascades over the well-dressed crowd as they fall prey to Solaris’s enchantment and Vivian’s lullaby.

The audience fights their drowsiness out of politeness, but they yawn and start FALLING ASLEEP.

Alma quickly succumbs to the lullaby’s effects as well.

Vivian shows what she can do with her instrument and plays until the end of the song.

When she looks up, the audience members are sound asleep.

VIVIAN

(whispers)

It actually worked.

SOLARIS

Miss Vivian, we need to hurry.

Vivian snaps back to reality and runs off stage.

Solaris, Vivian, and Bean hurry through the crowd to the closest exit. Vivian spots her sisters snuggled together, asleep and gently nudges them.

VIVIAN

(softly)

Hey, Valerie, Victoria, wake up.

Vivian draws them in for a hug. The girls yawn and cuddle with Vivian.

VICTORIA

Vivi?

VALERIE

Sleepy...

Solaris beckons Vivian to hurry up.

VIVIAN

Can you keep a secret?

The girls nod sleepily.

VIVIAN

Vivi’s going on a trip to bring Drake back.

Vivian gives her sisters each a kiss on their forehead.

VIVIAN

I’ll be back soon. Be good and don’t tell Nanny, ok?

She settles them back to sleep, then hurries to Solaris.

Int. Concert hall lobby - CONTINUOUS

Solaris walks ahead at a brisk pace, shaking Bean awake. He grabs hold of her horns before falling off.

Vivian jogs to keep up.

VIVIAN

I can’t believe that actually worked! It was almost like the beginning of *Sasha Sidewinder and the Secret* *Tunnel*, except-

Before Solaris opens one of the front doors, she pauses to look at Vivian.

SOLARIS

This isn’t like one of your stories, Miss Vivian.

VIVIAN

Vivian.

SOLARIS

Pardon?

VIVIAN

Just Vivian is fine.

SOLARIS

Okay then... *Just Vivian*. We still don’t truly know what we’re up against. Once we leave, there’s no return.

Vivian grins at the challenge and kicks off her fancy shoes. Bean jumps over to her shoulder.

VIVIAN

I’m ready.

SOLARIS

Go straight to the stable where your father’s horses are kept. I’ll meet you there as soon as I can.

ExT. Royal Graveyard - NIGHT

Fog has settled around the area as Vivian CRUNCHES with each step down a gravel path. On her right, a heavy WROUGHT IRON FENCE blocks them from entering a small plot of land.

Vivian peers between the bars to get a closer look at a GRAVEYARD full of headstones and statues worn down by time.

A BLACK ROSE rests on one of them. The rest are empty.

Bean SQUEAKS, darting through the fence’s bars like a fluffy comet.

She pulls on the front gate. It opens with a loud CREAK.

VIVIAN

(hushed)

Bean, we can’t stay here!

She follows Bean through the gravestones of her dead family members. He stops to sniff at the black rose.

Vivian takes the rose but drops it.

VIVIAN

Ouch!

Bean SQUEAKS in concern.

Blood falls on the gravestone. Vivian notices the name engraved on it.

“CELESTE BERGERON: BELOVED SISTER AND QUEEN.”

VIVIAN

(softly)

What happened to you?

Vivian inspects her cut thumb.

VIVIAN

C’mon Bean, we need to hurry.

INT. ROYAL STABLES - MoMENTS LATER

Vivian peeks through the entrance of the stables.

Several horses sleep in their stalls. A large hay trough rises in the center. A DUSTY WORKBENCH with farm tools is lined against the wall.

Seeing no one there, she walks in.

The PILE OF HAY rustles. Solaris jumps up from her hiding place. She now wears a short tunic and PANTS, with a worn leather set of adventurer’s pouches strapped to her hip and DRAKE’S BAG slung over her shoulder.

Vivian and Bean jump in surprise.

VIVIAN

How long have you been in there?

SOLARIS

You’re late.

She steps out of the trough.

VIVIAN

Solaris, you’re wearing pants!

Vivian laughs.

SOLARIS

Here, change into this. You’ll need a disguise. I’ve got a travel pack ready for you as well.

Solaris tosses her a set of plain peasant clothing, including a pair of pants.

VIVIAN

Trousers! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear these.

Vivian marvels at the simple clothing as she changes.

Solaris stretches her upper body - her back CRACKING and POPPING - as she limbers up, then takes a deep breath.

SOLARIS

There’s a lot you don’t know about me.

As she clears her throat, an ember of FIRE ignites from her mouth.

SOLARIS

Oh, goodness me.

VIVIAN (O.S.)

Ow, ow! Solaris!

Solaris turns to see Vivian seated on the floor, hair half undone. A few hairpins lay in Vivian’s lap, but several remain in her hair.

She holds up a tangled knot of hair to show Solaris. Bean nibbles at it.

VIVIAN

Can you help me with this?

Hair pins fall where they may as she stands.

Bean hops away over to the nearby workbench.

He inspects the various farm tools, including a leather sheathed THIN STEEL DAGGER. He sneezes adorably from the dust.

SOLARIS

Can it wait? We’re in a hurry, Vivian.

While Solaris talks, Vivian spots the dagger and unsheathes it with one hand.

SOLARIS

Once we’re safely out of here, I’ll see what I can—

Then Vivian bunches her tangled hair with the other.

SOLARIS

Vivian, don’t-

SNIP! The dagger slices through Vivian’s hair, leaving her hairstyle much shorter and uneven at her shoulders.

VIVIAN

Problem solved!

She admires the ball of tangled hair in her hand, then tosses it over her shoulder without a second thought.

Bean leaps back to Vivian’s head, sniffing through her new hairstyle.

Solaris grimaces and sighs. Vivian proudly puts the dagger back in its sheath and tucks it on her belt.

SOLARIS

It will grow back...

VIVIAN

It’s all part of the disguise.

Vivian notices a polished metal stirrup hanging from the stable wall, just reflective enough to show her face.

She steps closer, inspecting her new self. She lifts a lock of hair. The ends are jagged, uneven. Her smile is not.

Bean peeks into the reflection too - curious, but calm.

Vivian gives a faint nod to her reflection. Quiet. Resolute.

VIVIAN

*Not a doll anymore.*

She tucks the dagger into her belt.

SOLARIS

Here. Your pack.

Solaris hands her Drake’s bag.

VIVIAN

But—

SOLARIS

You can give it back when we meet him again.

Vivian nods.

VIVIAN

Let’s bring him home.

She puts on her cap and tucks Bean inside the bag.

SOLARIS

The cap won’t be needed. You’ll most likely lose it if you wear it now.

VIVIAN

What do you mean?

EXT. ROYAL STABLES - laTER

A BLAZING FIRE burns away at the roof. Frantic NEIGHS and WHINNIES come from within.

A frantic HUMAN GUARD (16) runs up.

HUMAN GUARD

Wah! Oh no!

He runs to the door with his arms flailing. The barn doors are opened from the inside.

Panicking horses stampede from the building, kicking up DUST CLOUDS around the human guard.

SOLARIS (O.S.)

Hold on tight!

Cendrillon, a white PEGASUS gallops past the other horses. Solaris, Vivian, and Bean ride as passengers.

VIVIAN

I thought we were being sneaky!

SOLARIS

That takes too long. The spell will be wearing off by now. Cendrillon, hi-yah!

Vivian closes her eyes and holds onto Solaris. A giant pair of wings unfold and with a few mighty flaps, they soar over the castle walls.

EXT. SKY - NiGHT

Cendrillon flies high in the sky with her passengers, gliding along the chilly night air.

Vivian looks down at the castle town below, decorated for the special occasion.

Little dots of torches illuminate the streets. The civilians hurry around like an overturned anthill.

Bean looks around while hiding in Vivian’s hair. Solaris spreads her arms as they tear through the wind.

SOLARIS

Looks like my adventuring days aren’t over after all.

Cut to:

Int. CoNCERT HALL - lATER

The audience members slowly awaken, stretching and yawning. Some have lines on their foreheads from falling asleep on the seat in front of them.

Castien enters the private booth to see Alma, Nanny, and the twins asleep.

He rushes to Alma’s side and shakes her.

CASTIEN

Alma, where’s Vivian!?

Alma jumps awake.

ALMA

Wha- She’s on the stage of course.

The stage is empty.

Castien and Alma look at each other in wide-eyed panic.

INT. VIVIAN’S ROOM - momENTS LATER

CASTIEN (O.S.)

Vivian, come out. Now!

Castien runs in alone. Vivian’s room is GRAY and EMPTY.

CASTIEN

Vivian?! I don’t know what game you’re playing at, but-

He moves the oddly placed rug. Broken glass and red flecks spatter the floor like a fresh crime scene.

He notices the snow globe of the castle, now destroyed. Vivian’s SIGNET RING rests on the bedside table.

Sir Gabriel enters.

SIR GABRIEL

Your Majesty, there’s no sign of Solaris or the princess anywhere on the grounds.

CASTIEN

Then don’t just stand there! Get a search party and go out and find her! Check the Variant colonies if you have to.

SIR GABRIEL

Yes, sir.

Sir Gabriel leaves.

He picks up the ring and holds it in his palm. A storm of guilt rages behind his eyes.

CASTIEN

Again... I was too late.

Int. STORAGE CLOSET - NIGHT

A PIPE ORGAN blares a mournful rendition of *Ever Yours** *in the next room.

The small area contains two cots shoved in the opposite corners, no blankets or pillows. Dorian lies in one, cramped for space. The other is empty.

Dorian twitches in his sleep, shaking his head.

DORIAN

No, no, don’t make me-

He bolts upright and rubs the sleep from his eyes, then tucks into a ball with a deep sigh, staring at the empty cot.

DORIAN

(quietly)

What a selfish sister...

He crawls out of bed and takes a few tentative steps forward, hesitating before opening the door as the music softens.

Int. Scary dungeon - ConTINUOUS

It’s dark. The moonlight streams through the window, outlining the room as The Conductor finishes the song. He sings lyrics to himself.

THE CONDUCTOR

(gently singing)

*Sing my name when I am gone. Let it echo, soft and strong...*

Despite his blindfold, he makes no mistakes. A BLACK ROSE lies alone on the music stand.

THE CONDUCTOR

*When you wake and I am dust...*

On a long dining table behind him rests a worn picnic basket filled with MISERY FRUIT.

THE CONDUCTOR

*Will you keep...*

The world around him fades away.

Begin flashback:

INT. Music Room - Day

The Conductor, now a regular young man in his late 20’s, sits at a piano bench. Next to him sits a young ELF woman. She heavily resembles Vivian, but is different: older, calmer, with BLUE EYES. She rests her head gently on his shoulder and whispers in his ear as he plays.

CELESTE

Elias... There’s something I need to tell you...

End Flashback:

Back to Scene

A door to his right creaks open. Dorian shuffles into the room, staring down at his feet.

The Conductor SLAMS his fist onto the organ’s keys.

THE CONDUCTOR

What-

DORIAN

I- I had a vision. She said a Gold Dragonian is traveling with the princess now.

The Conductor rises from his bench with a cold expression.

THE CONDUCTOR

Gold... So the beast has involved herself again.

The remaining candle lights extinguish, and the room begins to shake.

Dorian backs away, cowering.

DORIAN

Lydia told me to tell you right away! It’s not my-

THE CONDUCTOR

OUT!

The Conductor snatches his baton and flicks it at Dorian.

An INVISIBLE FORCE shoves Dorian back into the small closet. The door slams shut after him and audibly locks.

The Conductor picks up the black rose. As he sings, he caresses its thorns.

THE CONDUCTOR

*When you wake and I am dust...*

He traces the veins of a leaf with his thumbs.

THE CONDUCTOR

*Will you keep my song with us?*

He clenches his fist, and the stem SNAPS. As the petals scatter, the MISERY FRUIT within the basket begin to shimmer faintly.

THE CONDUCTOR

(softly)

They will remember me.

(rising, cold)

No more waiting.

(firm, final)

Let the curtain rise.

A drop of blood lands on the organ’s keys.
