She's been sick for a long time.

A beat.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

The medical bills kept piling up.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Then the mortgage started falling behind.

Lopez listens.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I didn't know what to do.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

So you went to William?

Cameron shakes his head.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

He came to me.

Lopez's eyes narrow.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

He knew about my wife.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

He offered to pay the medical bills.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

He offered to take care of the mortgage.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

And what did he want?

Cameron looks toward Freddy's bedroom.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

You.

Then—

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Freddy.

Lopez's face goes cold.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

What did you do?

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I gave him information.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

What kind of information?

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Where you were.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Where Freddy was.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Your plans.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

You were keeping tabs on us.

Cameron nods.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I didn't know what he was going to do.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

You knew enough.

Cameron looks ashamed.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I know.

A long silence.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

But I'm done.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

What?

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I'm done helping him.

Lopez stares at him.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I couldn't keep doing this.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Why tell me now?

Cameron looks toward Freddy's bedroom.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Because William is here.

Lopez freezes.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

What?

CAMERON DOUGLAS

He's in this house.

Lopez immediately reaches for his gun.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

He's been here the whole time.

A floorboard CREAKS.

Both men turn.

William steps out of the darkness.

Cameron's face drops.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

You should've kept your mouth shut.

Cameron takes a step backward.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

William—

William moves toward him.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Stay back!

William ignores him.

Cameron looks at Lopez.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I'm sorry.

William suddenly attacks Cameron with the concealed scalpel.

Cameron collapses.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

CAMERON!

Lopez reaches for his weapon.

William disappears into the darkness before Lopez can get a clear shot.

Lopez rushes to Cameron.

Cameron struggles to breathe.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Stay with me!

Cameron looks toward Lopez.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Freddy...

Lopez looks toward Freddy's bedroom.

Cameron forces out his final words.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

Get... him... out...

Lopez looks toward the hallway.

William is gone.

Lopez immediately turns toward Freddy's bedroom.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Freddy!

CUT TO BLACK.

INT. VACATION HOME — UPSTAIRS HALLWAY — NIGHT

Lopez kneels beside Cameron.

Blood stains Cameron's shirt.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Stay with me.

Cameron struggles to breathe.

CAMERON DOUGLAS

I'm... sorry.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Don't talk.

Cameron's eyes begin to lose focus.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Cameron?

Cameron doesn't respond.

Lopez checks for a pulse.

Nothing.

Lopez closes his eyes for a moment.

His best friend is dead.

Lopez slowly stands.

He looks toward Freddy's bedroom.

He knows what he has to do.

CUT TO:

INT. FREDDY'S BEDROOM — NIGHT

Freddy is still asleep.

Lopez quietly opens the door.

He approaches the bed.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Freddy.

Freddy doesn't move.

Lopez gently shakes his shoulder.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Freddy, wake up.

Freddy slowly opens his eyes.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Dad?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Get up.

Freddy sits up.

FREDDY BECKHAM

What's wrong?

Lopez closes the bedroom door.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

We need to talk.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Where's Cameron?

Lopez hesitates.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Dad?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Cameron's dead.

Freddy freezes.

FREDDY BECKHAM

What?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

William is here.

Freddy looks confused.

FREDDY BECKHAM

William?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

The man I told you about.

FREDDY BECKHAM

How did he find us?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Cameron helped him.

FREDDY BECKHAM

What?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

He was working for William.

Freddy struggles to process what he's hearing.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Why would Cameron do that?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

William offered to help Cameron with his wife's medical bills and mortgage.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

In exchange, Cameron kept tabs on you.

Freddy looks toward the door.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Where is William?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

I don't know.

A beat.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

But you need to stay close to me.

Freddy gets out of bed.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Dad, what aren't you telling me?

Lopez looks at him.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Everything I've been trying to protect you from.

FREDDY BECKHAM

What does that mean?

Lopez takes a breath.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Your father wasn't who you thought he was.

Freddy stares at him.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Michael Beckham was a hitman.

Freddy's expression changes.

FREDDY BECKHAM

What?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

They called him The Ghost.

Freddy shakes his head.

FREDDY BECKHAM

My dad?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Yes.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Why didn't you tell me?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

Because you were three years old.

A beat.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

You deserved a chance to grow up without knowing what your parents were.

FREDDY BECKHAM

And William?

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

He was a hitman too.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

They called him The Surgeon.

Freddy looks at Lopez in disbelief.

Suddenly—

A VOICE comes from behind them.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

He's right.

Lopez freezes.

Freddy slowly turns.

William stands in the doorway.

His gun is raised.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Both of you.

William steps into the room.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Don't move.

Lopez raises his hands.

He moves slightly in front of Freddy.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

William.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Twenty years.

William looks at Freddy.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Twenty years and you never told him.

Freddy stares at William.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Who are you?

William looks directly at him.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

I'm the Surgeon.

Freddy's face goes pale.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

And your father was the Ghost.

William takes a step closer.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

We were hitmen.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

We worked together.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

We killed people for money.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

We disappeared when the job was done.

Freddy looks at Lopez.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Is that true?

Lopez doesn't answer.

William does.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Yes.

Freddy looks back at William.

FREDDY BECKHAM

What happened?

William's expression changes.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Your father found out about me and your mother.

Freddy's eyes widen.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Sarah.

FREDDY BECKHAM

My mother?

William nods.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

She was having an affair with me.

FREDDY BECKHAM

And my father knew?

WILLIAM WHITMAN

He found out.

William's grip tightens around the gun.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

He confronted me.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

He told me to stay away from her.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

I refused.

A beat.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Then I went home.

William's voice becomes quieter.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

And found my family dead.

Freddy listens, horrified.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

My wife.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

My children.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Who did it?

William looks directly at him.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Your father.

Lopez immediately speaks.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

That's not the whole story.

William looks at Lopez.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

You don't get to tell him what happened.

William turns back toward Freddy.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

I found a note.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

A message telling me I should have listened.

Freddy looks at Lopez.

William watches him.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

That night changed everything.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

And twenty years later...

William looks directly into Freddy's eyes.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

I'm here to finish it.

CUT TO BLACK.

EXT. WOODS — NIGHT

Freddy and William crash through the trees.

Both are exhausted.

Both are wounded.

William swings at Freddy.

Freddy ducks.

William loses his balance.

Freddy grabs him and drives him into the ground.

They struggle.

William tries to reach for the gun.

Freddy gets there first.

He grabs it.

Freddy rolls away and immediately raises the gun.

William freezes.

Freddy stands over him.

The gun is aimed directly at William.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Go ahead.

Freddy's breathing is heavy.

His hands tremble.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

You think killing me is going to change anything?

Freddy stares at him.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

Your father was a killer.

WILLIAM WHITMAN

You know what he was.

Freddy's eyes fill with anger.

FREDDY BECKHAM

I know exactly what he was.

A beat.

FREDDY BECKHAM

But I'm not him.

William looks at him.

FREDDY BECKHAM

You killed my mom.

William's expression changes.

FREDDY BECKHAM

You killed my dad.

FREDDY BECKHAM

You killed Detective Lopez.

FREDDY BECKHAM

You killed Cameron.

Freddy's grip tightens around the gun.

FREDDY BECKHAM

You took everybody from me.

William slowly looks up at him.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Now it's time to return the favor.

BANG!

William is hit.

He falls backward.

Freddy stares at him.

William tries to move.

BANG!

William goes still.

Freddy lowers the gun.

He stands there for a moment.

Then—

Freddy pulls out his phone.

He dials 911.

FREDDY BECKHAM

I need the police.

A beat.

FREDDY BECKHAM

I have an injured man in the woods.

Freddy looks toward William.

FREDDY BECKHAM

He's not getting back up.

CUT TO BLACK.

SUPER:

SEVERAL MONTHS LATER

INT. PALEONTOLOGY MUSEUM — DAY

A large crowd fills the auditorium.

A banner hangs behind the stage.

Freddy Beckham stands at a podium.

Older somehow.

Stronger.

He looks completely at home.

FREDDY BECKHAM

When I first started studying paleontology, I thought the past was something buried.

The audience listens.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Something we could uncover, study, and understand.

A few people smile.

FREDDY BECKHAM

But I've learned that the past isn't always buried.

A beat.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Sometimes it follows you.

The audience applauds.

Freddy smiles.

FREDDY BECKHAM

And sometimes...

He looks out into the crowd.

FREDDY BECKHAM

...you have to decide what parts of it you're willing to carry forward.

The crowd applauds louder.

Freddy steps away from the podium.

He smiles.

Then—

Someone stands in the back of the auditorium.

Freddy looks toward him.

His smile slowly disappears.

The man begins walking toward the stage.

It's LOPEZ.

Alive.

Freddy stares in disbelief.

LOPEZ smiles.

Freddy's eyes widen.

FREDDY BECKHAM

Dad?

Lopez continues walking toward him.

The audience looks confused.

Freddy laughs in disbelief.

Lopez reaches the stage.

They embrace.

The audience applauds.

Freddy pulls away and looks at him.

FREDDY BECKHAM

You were supposed to be dead.

Lopez smiles.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

I know.

Freddy laughs.

DETECTIVE LOPEZ

You really thought I'd let you get rid of me that easily?

Freddy shakes his head.

They laugh.

The camera slowly pulls away.

Freddy looks out at the audience.

For the first time, he looks completely at peace.

FADE OUT.
